Reduction in services to School Psychs in the North!!!

Save Our School Psychologists

Premier Bartlett, in his address to the AEU Branch Council on Friday morning, has announced a resolution to the School Psychologists’ Campaign. The package deal will be taken to members for their endorsement next week but all the key points which AEU members were seeking have been included in the deal.

This success is directly attributable to the hard work of our School Psychologist members, along with the active support of many organizations and individuals who have been magnificent.

Thank you to all of you.

Student Rally at Franklin Square, Hobart on Friday the 31st of July

Support the people who support our youth! School based psychologists are a needed resource in schools. They provide counselling and support to students and teachers and diagnose students with mental illnesses and learning difficulties. They also work with members of the school community to raise awareness of issues that students and teachers are facing. Unfortunately, despite this, school based psychologists are being underpaid for the work they are doing.

The education department is not supporting school based psychologists. Due to this, graduating psychologists are not entering the education department in Tasmania. Schools are suffering because of this and, with the older generation of school based psychologists on the verge of retirement we are going to see a drastic lack of school based psychologists and our students aren’t going to receive the support they need. The education department has been entered in negotiations with the AEU (Australian Education Union) for approximately four years to no avail.

As students we feel the need for these services so we are holding a rally at Franklin Square, Hobart on Friday the 31st of July between 12pm and1pm. We are writing a petition for the Premier and will be explaining, in more detail, what the issues in question are and who they affect. There will be some guest speakers as well as students and psychologists to answer any questions you may have. We are hoping that, with community support we may be able to improve the conditions for school based psychologists. Please assist us in helping the people who help us!
